Fin dall’antichità i clown avevano un duplice carattere, negativo e positivo: erano ai margini della società, ma orribilmente affascinanti, e per questo erano allo stesso tempo avvicinati ed evitati.

Nel poemetto “Le fou et la Vénus” (il matto e Venere) Boudelaire descrive un giullare come “uno di quei pazzi artificiali, uno di quei buffoni volontari incaricati di fare ridere i re quando i rimorsi e la noia li assillano, tutto agghindato nel suo costume sgargiante e ridicolo(…)”

In una lettera all’amico Edouard Schurè, nel 1905, Roualt scrive: “…quel contrasto fra cose brillanti, scintillanti, fatte per divertire e quella vita di una tristezza infinita, se vista dall’alto…Ho visto chiaramente che il pagliaccio ero io, eravamo noi, quasi tutti…Qell’abito ricco, con i lustrini, è la vita che ce lo dà, siamo tutti dei pagliacci, più o meno, portiamo tutti un abito con i lustrini…”

Since ancient times, clowns had a dual character, negative and positive: they were on the margins of society, but horribly fascinating, and for this reason they were at the same time approached and avoided.

In the poem "Le fou et la Vénus" (the madman and Venus) Boudelaire describes a jester as "one of those artificial fools, one of those voluntary buffoons in charge of making kings laugh when remorse and boredom beset them, all dressed up in the his gaudy and ridiculous costume (...) "

In a letter to his friend Edouard Schurè, in 1905, Roualt writes: "... that contrast between brilliant, sparkling things made for fun and that life of infinite sadness, if viewed from above ... I clearly saw that the clown was me , it was us, almost everyone ... That rich dress, with spangles, is the life that gives it to us, we are all clowns, more or less, we all wear a dress with spangles ... "
